Most popular engagement ring styles

An engagement ring is likely to be one of the most expensive purchases you’ll ever make and choosing the right one can be a difficult decision. With so many different styles, metals, shapes and types of gemstone available, the options are endless, and can sometimes be overwhelming. In this guide, we take a look at some of the most popular engagement ring styles, to help with your decision.

Solitaire

A timeless classic, the solitaire ring has remained one of the most popular engagement ring styles since it was first introduced back in the 1940s. This minimalist style focuses all the attention on the spectacular diamond at its centre. While a round white diamond is the traditional choice, other diamond shapes and colours can add a contemporary feel. In 2023, the oval-shaped diamond solitaire is having its moment, with celebrities including Molly-Mae Hague and Zoe Sugg opting for this elegant style.

Halo

If you’re looking for more opulence than a solitaire, you can’t go wrong with a halo engagement ring. This style features a large central stone (often a diamond, emerald or ruby) enhanced by a frame of delicate glittering diamonds. First popularised in the Victorian Era, the halo regained its popularity in the 1930s and 40s and remains a firm favourite due to its vintage look. Famous halo engagement ring wearers include The Princess of Wales, Eva Longoria and Rita Ora.

Trilogy

Sometimes known as three-stone rings, a trilogy ring makes the perfect engagement ring as the stones symbolise three eras of your relationship (past, present and future). There are many ways to customise a trilogy ring – it may include a larger central stone and two smaller stones either side, or all the stones in the same size. Different shapes and coloured stones can also be used together to create a modern and completely unique design, like actress Zooey Deschanel’s quirky engagement ring, which she showed off after getting engaged earlier this year. She’s in good company, with famous faces including Meghan Markle and Nicole Kidman also sporting trilogy rings in more traditional designs.

Diamond band

Worn by celebrities including Margot Robbie and Blake Lively, this style of engagement ring typically features a large central diamond (or other gemstone), with micro diamonds embedded in the ring band. It’s the perfect option if you’re looking for the elegant, classic feel of a solitaire, but with a little more intricacy and sparkle. The delicate appearance of the smaller diamonds ensures that nothing is taken away from the stunning central stone. Alternatively, if you’re looking for a ring with even more opulence, you also have the option to have a diamond band on halo and trilogy style rings.
