A step-by-step guide to the bespoke jewellery process

Having a bespoke piece of jewellery made for you or a loved one is incredibly special. Not only do you get a completely unique and personal creation, but you can also be part of the exciting design process, ensuring your perfect end product. Find out more about what is involved in this step-by-step guide to the bespoke jewellery process.

Step one - your personal consultation
One of the most important steps in the bespoke jewellery process is the initial consultation. This is your chance to express what you envisage for your creation, including your preference for different metals or stones, and to set your budget. If you’ve been inspired by any pieces you’ve seen elsewhere, it is worth bringing images to show the designer, as it can help them visualise what you have in mind. They will collaborate with you on the design, giving their creative input, to turn the jewellery of your dreams into a reality.

Step two – choosing your diamond or gemstones
With over 200 gemstones available, making the right choice can feel overwhelming. Following your initial consultation, you’ll have another appointment to view a range of beautiful coloured gemstones and diamonds and see what sparks your imagination. The first drawings of your jewellery will also be presented to you in this meeting, where you can give your initial feedback and the designer can make any revisions.

Step three – choosing your design
The next meeting is where you choose ‘the one’. This decision is very important, so you need to make sure you are completely happy with the design, however after this meeting, a 3D model will be printed off so you can go back for a final appointment to ensure your jewellery is as exactly as you want. Once you have picked the perfect piece, your designer will start the process of bringing it to life.

Step four – handcrafting your jewellery

It’s now time for your design to go to the workshop, where your precious metal of choice will be shaped and your gemstones and/or diamonds will be mounted to create a stunning handcrafted piece of jewellery. The timeframe for the creation process will vary depending on the design, but usually takes between six to eight weeks.

Step five – the finishing flourish
At this stage of the bespoke jewellery process, you will be given an opportunity to make your piece even more personal by having it engraved with a special message, date or initials. Before the hallmark is applied, the piece is sent off to be professionally tested and verified at one of the UK’s Assay Offices.

Step six – the reveal
The moment you’ve been waiting for, your finished jewellery is now ready for you to collect and wear, or gift to that special someone. All that is left to do is enjoy and treasure your unique bespoke creation.

Here at Robert Bicknell, we handcraft bespoke pieces of jewellery from scratch, or can remodel an existing piece, such as a family heirloom. Find out more about our bespoke jewellery making service here or get in touch to speak to one of the team.
